Offered to help stop all the horror stories I have seen and heard.

THE LAST THING YOU DO IS SELECT A DESIGNER!

DO NOT ALLOW
ANYONE TO REGISTER
YOUR WEB SITE NAME FOR YOU.
YOU MUST DO IT YOURSELF !

Do following steps in order:
 
1. First, you register the domain name yourself, in your name. You make the phone call.
             Tell the registrar to record you are the Registrant
             Tell the registrar to record you are the Technical contact.
             Tell the registrar to record you are the Billing contact.
             Put the User ID and Password for this account in a safe and retrievable place.
                       You will use them to change a hosting company selected (below) if you need to.

2. Then you select a hosting company. ( A company [server] to take the designers pages and provide them to the Internet. )
             The registrar will offer you the hosting service for a "special price" DON'T DO IT!
             Make sure you have selected a hosting service before you call a designer.
             Put the hosting company's User ID and Password for this account in a safe and retrievable place.
                       You will use them to change a designer selected (below) if you need to.

3. Now you select a  web designer.
             A web site designer will also offer you all the above services. DON'T DO IT!

"Can't I save money if I do everything with one company?".
Yes you can.  But, you will loose control.
Just consider the extra money spent as insurance.
