The City of San Clemente and The Heritage of San Clemente Foundation dedicated and unveiled The Marine Monument at Park Semper Fi, San Clemente Pier Bowl, at noon on Saturday, November 12, 2005.
The Schedule was as follows:
10:00 a.m.: Marine Displays (Pier Bowl)
10:30 a.m.: Navy Hovercraft arrives north of Pier (viewing from Pier Only)
11:30 a.m.: 55 Piece 1st Marine Division Band - Patriotic Melodies
12:00 p.m.: Dedication & Fly-Over
1:00 p.m.: Reception at Historic Casa Romantica
The Dedication speaker will be Major General Michael R. Lehnert, Commander of Marine Corps Installations West and the former Assistant Commandant of USMC, General J.K. Davis. We expect several thousand attendees including Marines from Camp Pendleton.
The Dedication date was selected as it is two days after the 230th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps’ birthday and one day after Veterans Day. Park Semper Fi is located on a hill that has a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean.
The Monument is an 11 foot (including base-bronze) Marine in dress blues saluting a flag and looking out over the Pacific Ocean.
The Monument is surrounded by a newly created park comprised of California native plants indigenous to Camp Pendleton coastal.
All monies ($200,000) were raised by The Heritage of San Clemente Foundation, a non-profit group, over a two-year period.
At a time when the Iraq war is stirring debate for the American people, the residents of this community want to show their support of the military and especially the United States Marine Corps who are our neighbors to the immediate south.
